Club Champs Day 1, Saturday 14th June

Dear all,

Some great matches and beautiful weather graced Day 1 of the OC tournament. It was scorchio on and off court!

Here are some of the highlights from Saturday's action :

A good day for the Iresons with both Charlotte and her son Freddie prevailing.

An exciting match in the U12 girls with Omaira Anand defeating Kiki Marchand and a good win for 14 year old Livy Odgers v Anna Leslie in the main draw.

Patrick Silla made some remarkable retrievals against George Ronson , but in the end George was too strong.

Wily Simon Godfrey looked like he was going to have too much court craft for John Barton .

Whilst Nyig Tim with his powerful (and quite noisy – eat your heart out Aryna) serving was edging it against R. Fritschi . Though, Fritschi gets my shot of the day for a magnificent forehand drive volley winner.

We were sorry not to see Miguel Vieira ’s legendary backhand as he relaxed in the sun having been given a walkover.

Match of the day was Jo Cheung v Lousia Butler which Louisa won 11-9 in the championship tie-breaker.

Next week will no doubt hold many delights, but am I alone in particularly looking forward to the return of I. Savage to competitive play? – let’s hope the elbow holds up!

Sunday is packed full of men's singles action and there should be some fantastic tennis on show, not least as men's number one seed Tom Fenton will begin his attempt to defend his single's title against Emeric Monfort .

Number four seed Lewis Henderson will also kick off his campaign against Marc Meyohas , a player many a highly ranked OC player has struggled to shrug off.

Our pick for match of the day though is a tight match up between Benson Yuen , number nine seed, and longstanding OC big-server Jonathan Pearson .
