Club Champs Order of Play & Highlights Day 3

A beautiful summer’s evening at Old College - certainly competition for another tournament in West London…Some strong performances from seeds tonight, with no major upsets despite some close matches.

Here are some of the highlights of Monday's action:

The first session of the evening saw some strong action from the vets.

Good friends Mahv and Gilly prevailed in the end in the ladies doubles vets despite a fight back in the second set from Kate and Juliet . Gilly was ultimately able to serve it out and overcome the nerves, winning 6-1, 6-4.

In the vets mens singles there were strong performances from long-standing members Charlie Casey and Mark Alderson , both emerging victorious. Charlie deployed his best slice and dropshots to beat Giacomo Facchini 6-2, 6-3 with Mark beating Mark Cheung 6-3, 6-1.

Back in the main draw Jamie Burnett , sporting a sharp new haircut, proved too much for Charles Holroyd winning 6-1 6-1.

There was a double bill for Alasdair Bradley - first up mens doubles with Tom Hladick with a tough match against relative unknowns Ed Thompson and George Petrie . Some beautiful hitting from all sides, and Ed and George had a set point in the 2nd set, but Alasdair and Tom were able to close it out in the end without the championship tie-break.

Also a strong display from seeds Jonathan Pearson and Tom Leech prevailing 6-0, 6-1 in their men’s doubles.

And a great display from 13 year-old Elliot with some wonderful rallies and fighting spirit, although 2nd team player David Jovic did take it in the end, 6-3, 6-1.

Tomorrow's Matches to Watch:

Tuesday sees the top six women's singles seeds take to the courts, with last year's winner and number one seed Virunee Viravong taking on tricky lefty Charlotte Ireson . The huge forehand and serve of relative newcomer Hannah Pulford will also be on show, as she kicks off her first OC singles campaign against Hilary Woof .

Elsewhere, in what will surely be a tense showdown, friends Simon Godfrey and Gill Kirwan will challenge Miguel Viera and Mahvash "the wall" Tavassoli in the over 50s mixed dubs.

As the evening goes on, there will be some exciting men's doubles action, with several family partnerships on display. Father son duo Charlie and James Casey face Dermot McCloskey and Karol Zagajewski, while the formidable Henderson pairing and number 8 seeds will take on Edward Jenner and Phil Coletto .

Meanwhile, Leslie van Ruyskensvelde will be manning the bar, serving up tasty snacks and delectable drinks. So get down and support your favourite OCers. We hope to see you there!
