OC Club Champs. 2024 - Fri 14th (Day 7) Order of Play

Dear all,

There’s only one place to be on Friday night to blend the opening match of Euro 2024 with some top-class tennis: Women’s 50+ doubles and Men’s Singles and Doubles take centre stage.

Ones to watch...

There’s some inter-team rivalries at play in the WD50+ doubles with OC Women’s Team 5’s Anna Leslie (fast becoming the most mentioned player in our previews!) & Manjit Roseghini take on Team 4’s Rosie Campbell and Lorna Tidmarsh. Gill Kirwan and Amanda Shaw vs. Georgina Anderson and Nadya Chernysheva could also get interesting.

On the Men’s side there’s a couple of very tasty looking doubles for you. No. 8 seeds and regular pairing Daniel Ajegbo and Hugh Moran take on late entrants Tom Hladick and Stanislas Ntchouissi. Butterfly Club duo and no.4 seeds Marc Baylis and Jed Blacknell go again against Jorge Diez Alvarez and Mikus Buls in a rain-delayed clash.

In the singles, big-serving Jonathan Pearson takes on the guile and oh-so-sexy single-backhander of no. 4 seed Jo Weiland .

What else is on?

Get prepared for some Dad jokes and comical bickering as Phil and Sarah line up as your Friday-night bartenders. A beer and a glass of Sauv Blanc pls? Not in the same glass I hope? We’ll also have the opening match of Euro 2024 on the big screen as Scotland take on hosts Germany.

As ever, remember to follow OC on Instagram @oldcollegetennis, where lots of photos and videos of the tournament will be posted!

Thursday's highlights

Rain. Wind. Cold. Is it really June? Virunee was a superstar stand-in tournament director, navigating plenty of 'to be finished' matches.

But this was the night for the second big upset of this year's championships as OC Men's Team 3's Nick Orgovanyi came back from a set down to eliminate no.7 seed and former US college player Jeff McKenzie in a tight champ tiebreak, 10-8.

Also in the comeback game was Kumayl Walji, fighting back in MS 50+ from losing the first set against Roberto Savoia to win.

And how about some recent wisdom from a certain Roger Federer to finish:

"When you lose every second point, on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot," said Federer.

"When you're playing a point, it is the most important thing in the world.

"But when it's behind you, it's behind you. This mindset is really crucial, because it frees you to fully commit to the next point and the next one after that with intensity, clarity and focus.

"You want to become a master at overcoming hard moments. That to me is the sign of a champion."
