Dear all,
The weekend line up didn’t disappoint! On Saturday, Tom Hladick and Jonathan Pearson were first up on the main stage (court 1) and got the ever-growing OC crowd warmed up with an energetic, closely fought contest which newbie Hladick nicked in his so far impressive debut champs. Saturday also saw plucky performances from improver and team 6 women players Marcella Pearson and Charmaine Chin, acquitting themselves well against the heavy hitting first teamers Jess Moody and Hannah Gibbons in their respective singles matches.
As the evening wore on, attention turned to doubles. Spectators were firstly treated to our current men’s 50+ doubles champions Baylis and Harper securing a spot in the final after out-classing a solid Casey and Viera pairing. And finally, the desirable Saturday evening slot on court 1 was awarded to Freddie and Charlotte Ireson, who played in front of a full house against headliners Emma Michell and Duncan McIntosh. Freddie and Charlotte produced some great stuff, rising to the occasion, but it wasn’t enough to beat the XD juggernauts.
Sunday was hot. A bad day for matches being decided in a 3rd set championship tiebreak. But that was what happened in five of our matches in the high heat of the early afternoon! Anna Leslie and Vicky Flind both battled through to win 10-8 in the 3rd set tiebreaks of their WS50+ matches against Alison O’Mahony and Sylvia Schubert respectively. In the men’s open singles, Benson Yuen’s hopes were cruelly ended in a 3rd set tiebreak by Miles Speer, who is starting to look like a serious contender going in the semis of the draw. Alyson Fox continued her winning streak, pipping Alice Allen in 3 sets, and Jess Moody produced another devastating display, handing out her second 6-0, 6-0 of the tournament.
Finally, Marc Baylis secured his third win of the weekend, pairing new member Louisa Butler to topple the 2nd seeds McIntosh and Michell, and earn a spot in the semis. Joe Reeve dusted himself down from his tough loss earlier in the day to Milan to pair up with Jane Buswell to defeat Lipington and Anderson.
