OC Club Champs. 2024 - Sat 15th (Day 8) Order of Play

Dear all,

Super Saturday comes to Old College tomorrow and boy do we have a line up of matches in store, with men’s and women’s singles and doubles action going on throughout the day.

Ones to watch...

The women’s singles really gets going, with top seeds Virunee Viravong , Amy Sergeant and Emma Michell all in the line-up. A particularly jam-packed day for Emz also sees her in Mixed Doubles action with coach Hamid Irshad and in the Women’s doubles with last year’s treble-winner and general legend Jess Moody , making her long-awaited return to the court after a lengthy injury lay-off.

Make sure you’re at the club at 12 for the finale of a close encounter in the men’s singles between big-serving underdog Jonathan Pearson and fourth seed Jo Weiland . Jonathan took the first set 7-6, after making a remarkable comeback from 5-2 down. Jo is up a break in the second set but is another JP comeback on?

At 3pm doubles pairing and good friends Max McCreery and no.12 seed Joe Tyndall face off in the Men’s singles. The tensions may be running high between the pair, though, after Joe noted in a post-match interview earlier this week that he had only opted to pair with Max because no. 1 seed in the singles Miles Speer was blanking him. Sparks may fly.

Elsewhere,14th seed Tom Hladick takes on youngster George Hope , Karanvir Anand (11th seed) faces off against Daniel Ajegbo , and it’s the first appearance for no.1 seed and defending champion Miles Speer . Miles’ killer forehand will be on full show in an intriguing clash with past giant killer Marc Meyohas .

What else is on?

A taste sensation is in store with Bob Henderson serving up chicken and mediterranean roasted veg tomorrow, taking a stint behind the bar with club treasurer Caroline Beck. We’ll also have all the Euros on the big screen, including Spain vs. Croatia and Italy vs. Albania.

As ever, remember to follow OC on Instagram @oldcollegetennis, where lots of photos and videos of the tournament will be posted!

Friday's highlights

Phil and Sarah’s offering of Spanish omelette, pizza and banter certainly brought the crowds in, with standing room at a premium to watch no.4 seeds in the Men’s doubles Marc Baylis and Jed Blacknell get the better of Mikus Buls and Jorge Diaz Alvarez 6-4, 6-3. Marc later reflected it was all down to the ‘good vibes’ of his vintage Andre Agassi shirt. We’re hoping he’s getting it in the wash tonight ready for tomorrow’s singles.

The drama continued as JP rolled back the years in some punishing rallies and spot serving against Jo Weiland (above). ‘Where has this come from, JP?’ voiced Vice-Chair Ivan Savage. Can he do it again tomorrow?

Elsewhere, tight matches abound in the women’s 50+ categories as Nicola Cox defeated Anna Leslie 10-5 in a champ tiebreak, and Gill Kirwan & Amanda Shaw edged past Georgina Anderson and Nadya Chernysheva also in a champ tiebreak, 10-7. Despite the 6-3, 7-5 scoreline, Sally Cole and Juliet Griffiths endured the longest match of the day, taking over 2 hrs to get the better of Henrietta Carrozzo and Kate Devos .
