Dear all,
Another glorious day of sunshine and thrilling tennis, with a string of nail-biting championship tiebreaks.
Here are some of the highlights from Sunday’s action :
It was a banner day for the Henderson tennis dynasty, with wins for both father Bob and son Lewis . Bob, club deputy chair, outfoxed Nyig Tin in the Men’s +50s with trademark consistency and composure—channelling, if not slicing like, Queen’s winner Tatjana Maria.
In the Men’s Singles Lewis , the 4th seed and a top junior, proved too strong for Marc Meyohas in a youth-vs-experience clash, showcasing impressive court coverage from Marc and shot-making from Lewis .
Team 3 pair Nick Stott and Daniel Ajegbo just edged out promising juniors Archie Beeson and Matt Beales , surviving a near comeback in the champs tiebreak. The final point saw Nick pull off an amazing defensive lob after a run-in with the Court 2 hitting wall.
In the U12s, there was another nail-biter as Arihann Anand edged Rhys Hauesser 12-10 in the champs tiebreak—clearly inheriting his father’s competitive grit.
Top seed Tom “the machine” Fenton eased past Emerich Monfort in the Men’s Singles, though the score didn’t reflect the quality of the rallies.
And in a clash of Men’s Team 2 powerhouses, new dad Benson Yeun showed he hasn’t lost his touch, defeating Jonathan Pearson in two great sets.
Match of the Day goes to Joe Reeve vs Michael Feeney . Joe , down a set and then facing a match point, fought back to win this Men’s Singles clash in a gutsy championship tiebreak performance.
Tomorrow's matches to watch:
Monday's night session will see numerous OC superstars in action in the men's singles, with men's 2nd and 6th seeds Matt Whitehead and Jo Weiland hitting the courts.
OC legends Gill Kirwan and Mahv Tavassoli will also be gracing the courts in the women's 50+ ladies doubles, in an interesting looking encounter against Kate Devos and Juliet Griffiths . Meanwhile, a battle of the Mark's will be on show, as Chung takes on Alderson in an intriguing match up.
But match of the day will surely be between promising young junior Elliot Ofori , aged just 13, who will take on men's 16th seed David Jovic . Could an upset be on the cards?
