Dear all,
Who needs an England match when you have the OC Club Champs? Tomorrow serves up a treat: Men’s Singles QF, Mixed QF with the stardust provided by a splattering of vets QFs and the first Men’s Doubles SF. Come down to watch it all!
**Note we have shifted start times forward 15 mins to avoid any matches running over, so will be starting play at 6.15pm prompt. For those with this start time, please arrive by 6.10pm latest.**
Ones to watch...
No.1 seed and defending champion in the Men’s Singles Miles Speer takes on rising star and no.7 seed Louis Henderson , sure to be first up on the show court. Playing alongside them will be no. 3 seed Matt Whitehead taking on another exceptional junior, Charlie Beales , fresh from a stunning overnight come back against no. 5 seed Stan ‘the man’ Ntchouissi. Will it be a day for young, or the very young?
Then follows some intriguing Mixed Doubles. It’s power vs. guile as No. 2 seeds Jess Moody and James Gubb resume their title defence against no. 5 seeds Amy Sergeant and Phil Harper. It’s the tale of the three Jos as no. 3 seeds Joe Tyndall and Hannah Pulford take on ‘Jo squared’ Reeve and Morris. They’re preceded by no.1 seeds Tom Fenton (who’s not played quite enough tennis these past few days) & Virunee Viravong against Women’s Captain Alyson Fox and Tom Hladick . Alyson was telling me this evening she’s lost just four games in four matches thus far. Things might just change after this one.
What else is on?
England vs. Denmark will be live on the big screen from 5pm, with Mixed Doubles Captain and club favourite Nick Stott behind the bar. Can the Three Lions roar?
As ever, remember to follow OC on Instagram @oldcollegetennis, where lots of photos and videos of the tournament will be posted!
Wednesday's highlights
If you thought some of the main draw ties had a competitive edge, you need to have a watch of some of the vets. Battling it out on court 6 with a surprising level of expletives, ‘feigned’ racket throws and grunting for four longstanding friends and partners were Vice Chair Ivan Savage and Judy Hammond against Mark Alderson and Gill Kirwan . Ivan and Judy took the first set 6-4, before losing the second and going down 10-5 in the Champ tiebreak. All was well in the bar afterwards though.
Next to them was arguably the match of the day as no. 6 seeds in the Men’s Doubles the Jonathans Pearson and Sedcole ran no. 2 seeds Tom Fenton and Jeff McKenzie close in a high-class match full of rat-a-tat-tat net play. After the first went to Tom and Jeff, it was one tiebreak a piece as Tom and Jeff edged the 10-pointer.
Elsewhere, no.6 seed Jed Blacknell became the first semi-finalist of the Men’s Singles, showing off the full range of his whiplash of a forehand in taking out no.4 seed Jo Weiland 6-1, 6-3. No. 2 seed Tom Fenton (told you he hadn’t been playing enough tennis this week) couldn’t quite beat the lights and will resume battle with this year’s giant killer Nick Orgovanyi 6-4, 3-2 up.
