Day 10 Breakfast results

Fresh from the cryo chamber.
Tuesday 23 June – Match Report

Whilst those who’ve been knocked out slouch back contentedly quaffing cold beers – those
still in the OC tournie are sweating. Profusely. It’s +32 degrees even after 6pm! As the great
Stevie Wonder said, it’s ‘Hotter than July’ and he knows a thing or two.

The scramble was on to find the shadiest court. Anna Leslie said it’s court 5. And she’s often
right.

Who could keep their cool when the heat is on?

Master Blaster
There were a few contenders for this sobriquet

Monty Coletto [2] beat Laurence Bonzani in the U11 Boys Singles quarter final. According to
coach Alex, Bonzani was hitting freely after his earlier win. But Monty prevailed 4-0, 4-0

Then in the U12 Boys’ Singles Semi Final Monty held on to his winning ways against Noah
Ghezzi 4-2, 4-2. The first game lasting an exhausting 10 minutes. Due to the heat both
agreed to a 4, instead of 6 game set. Sensible lads.

Rosie Allan, large glass of wine in hand, was spied toasting her grandson.

Phoenix Bidder was also dominant against Arihaan Anand in the Boys’ U12’s quarter final. 4-
0 4-0. And followed up with a decisive result in the U14’s – Quarter Final V Vasili Tsangalis
4-1 4-0. Proud dad Sean, never far away.

Elsewhere in the boys singles….
Laurence Bonzani vs Freddie Timmins was an epic 3 setter. With Timmins, who’s young for
U11’s, fighting valiantly, but Bonzani came through 11-9 in the tiebreak. Steam was coming
off both of them. The pair cooled off by chatting with Alex in the clubhouse before the 3 rd set.
True sportsmen.

Freddie Tidbury beat Sebastian Takacs 4-0 4-1. (U11 Q final) A strong showing from Seb
who was upbeat about his game afterwards.

U11’s Sebastian Takacs took a walkover as Max Clarke had a cookery lesson!

U18’s Filipp Evsikov edged it 4-0, 3-4, 4-1 against Rocco Jacob

Other Master Blaster contenders….
Alasdair Bradley / Marc Baylis vs James Ireson / Attila Takacs . The score 6-1, 6-1 Marc
claimed ‘heat was the winner’ but conceded that the ‘i’ formation worked well.

Lewis Henderson [6] vs Joe Reeve [12] Lewis won 6-0, 6-0 ooh!

Tom Fenton confessed to playing in Luke’s trainers after considering playing in his office
brogues. Still, he powered to a 6-1 6-0 win over Will Cutler.

Jed Blacknell [7] beat the popular Nyig Tin 6-1, 6-0

Mixed doubles quarter final – and Luke Hymas [3 ] /Emma Michell took on Daniel Malyon
/Sonia Whitehead. Luke’s killer tactic: ‘I chose to put the leftie looking straight into the sun’
The score 6-0, 6-2.

In the vets - Adam Burgis [2] and Aruna Iyengar beat Manjit Roseghini and Mark Cheung 6-
0, 6-1. Mark’s reaction : ‘Happy with a breadstick’

And in the Women Doubles 50+ Alyson Fox and Aruna Iyengar beat Anna Leslie and
Manjit Roseghini 6-0 6-2 . Iain Macdougall watching closely had a momentary lapse, he went
for a drink and Anna won 2 games.

In the Men Doubles 50+ Quarter Final Marc Baylis and Phil Harper beat Jean-Michel
Steiger and Ken Cheong 6-0 6-0. JM’s rueful analysis - ‘we have a lot of work ahead of us’.

I ain’t going to stand for it
Mixed doubles is a test of any relationship and so it proved on this steamy night.

Phil Harper/Jess Moody beat Aly Fox/Hamid Irshad 0-6, 6-1, clinching it in a tiebreak
Phil said his nerves were completely shredded. No wonder. Aly claimed Hamid couldn’t put
the ball away, got so angry with his angled dinking and wacked the ball at hapless Hamid’s
hind quarters.

The OC Fox appeared - gave a knowing wink…and made off

Others were ‘Rubbin on their ‘good luck charms’ …

Lewis Henderson / Tom Henderson [8] beat Joe Reeve / Benson Yuen 6-1 7-5. Sadly for Joe
his luck had run out

Didn’t know you would be jamming until the break of dawn….
Ivan Savage’s sentiments as he watched Judy Hammond and Silvia Schubert take a win
over Caroline Beck and Nicola Cox. The score belied the long games. 6-2 6-2

And so to the Mixed Doubles quarter final as the mercury finally fell

Tom Fenton / Virunee Viravong beat Henry Britton / Vicky Flind 7-6 6-2. Virunee’s verdict:
‘Vicky’s tricky’.

Happy Birthday
Fact: On Tuesday it was 10 years since the Brexit referendum
*
As the scorching day ended Hamid was seen desperately asking players to take rubbish
home.

Perspiring winners and losers watched England V Ghana realising it’s not just tennis that’s
excruciating at times…
