Another glorious sunny evening at Old College, and Team 6 proving they know the secret recipe for a perfect tennis night — pizza, cake, and strawberries! Honestly, what more could we possibly ask for? (Apart from maybe a few extra hours of daylight…)
The courts were buzzing with family pairings, new partnerships, and plenty of brave souls taking on back-to-back matches. Legs were tested, rackets were flying, and refreshments were definitely earned. What an evening!
The top seeds were out in force today, and both showed exactly why they are among the favourites to lift the trophy. Opening proceedings on the show court was seed number 4, Dafydd James, who brought his trademark steady power game against Dermot McCloskey, whose forehand was firing like it had a personal grudge against the ball. Dermot came out swinging and was determined to make Dafydd work for every point, but Dafydd’s consistency, composure, and ability to absorb the pressure proved too much as he came through strongly with a 6-1 6-0 win.
Not to be outdone, seed number 2, Tom Fenton, also cruised through his match with a composed display, showing why he is one of the players everyone is keeping an eye with a 6-0 6-0 win.
Both men are looking in formidable form… but the big question remains — can anyone stop them? The chasing pack will be sharpening their rackets and looking for a chance to cause an upset!
Elsewhere, Vicky Flind treated us to a masterclass in touch and timing with a drop-shot return so delicate it looked like the ball had been given a parking ticket and politely asked to stop. The chase was on… although we’re not sure even Usain Bolt in his prime would have reached that one!
Even the club fox made an appearance, clearly recognising that the standard of tennis was worth stopping by for. A true tennis critic.
The new pairing of Dafydd and Hannah Pulford took to the courts and made an immediate statement with a strong first victory in under and hour — a partnership to watch!
The pairing of Nick Stott and Daniel Ajegbo proved a formidable force, coming through strongly against Coach Hamid and Sam Foster. Despite Hamid pulling out every tactical trick in the book — including some outrageous balls fired down the line that caught everyone off guard — Nick and Daniel’s power, consistency, and teamwork were simply too much on the night.
Meanwhile, Dulwich winner Lewis Henderson teamed up with his mum to take on the experienced duo of Matt Cowie and Jane Buswell. Lewis’ volleys were simply too sharp, with his net play causing all sorts of problems and helping secure a memorable win.
Match of the evening contenders? There were plenty…
The Iresons vs Woofs produced a phenomenal contest on the hard court, with neither pair willing to give an inch. After a tense battle, the Iresons edged it 7-6, 6-4 — a scoreline that tells the story of just how close it was.
But stealing the show had to be Aruna Iyengar vs Silvia Schubert. A full-on tennis exhibition of slicing, dicing, chasing, and charging. The rallies went from corner to corner, with players sprinting forwards, backwards, and probably wondering why they signed up for such an intense workout!
Another unforgettable evening at Old College — great tennis, great food, great company, and even a fox in attendance. Not a bad way to spend a summer evening!
