OC Club Champs. 2024 - Thurs 13th (Day 6) Order of Play

Dear all,

With a bit of comedy to boot, tomorrow the 50+ events take centre stage, with a full line-up of Men’s and Women’s 50+ singles accompanying a scattering of other matches.

And just because there’s comedy in the clubhouse, talking of the 50+ ‘vets’ events a friend of a friend (seriously) once asked ‘why do you have a tournament just for vets, not doctors or something?’.

Ones to watch...

We’re predicting a tight encounter in the WS 50+ as Anna Leslie looks to put a tight defeat in the Women’s Singles behind her in a match-up against Nicola Cox . The first match featuring a seed in the main Women’s Singles draw then pits 5th seed and former champion Jane Buswell against Anna’s conqueror Leslie Van Ruyskensvelde .

On the Men’s side there are plenty of seeds in the MS 50+ in action, including no.8 seed Charlie Casey taking on OC Men’s 7th Team captain Mark Cheung . And at 8pm there’s a tasty looking contest between new OC Men’s 1st teamer Jeff McKenzie and 3rd team player Nick Orgovanyi . Coach Hamid Irshad also takes on two of his charges, George Hope and Freddie Ireson , as he partners Benson Yuen in the Men’s Doubles.

What else is on?

It’s time for some comedy performed by our very own Eileen Mahony . Eileen will be performing Loft Luggage at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year so we're very lucky to be able to preview her performance here at the clubhouse! £5 a ticket. Gill and Ed will be behind the bar, with some homemade cake, but for this evening only we ask for your cooperation in keeping noise down as you buy your drinks as Eileen’s is a spoken word, one-woman show ??

Wednesday's highlights

Day 5 of the tournament produced another splendid evening of tennis with an enthusiastic crowd served delicious Bangers n’ Mash by the Ladies’ 5th Team.

The early matches saw lovebirds Jonathan and Marcella Pearson maintain their sang-froid to overcome Mark Alderson and Caroline Beck on court 8, giving Marcella her 3rd straight victory of the week.

David Jovic and Roberto Savoia gave a spirited performance against Karanvir Anand and Rob Green , with the latter pair taking the match in two sets.

Meanwhile on the Show Court, it turned out the only way really was Essex, as silver fox Phil Harper joined forces with Amy Sergeant to take on coach Luke Hymas and plucky junior Dominique Brooks . A tight first set saw the Essex pair (Phil and Amy) save 5 set points before closing both the set and the match out, despite some seriously impressive points from coach and protégée.

It was definitely a night for the youngsters with Luke and Finlay Brown holding Jonathan Pearson and Jonny Sedcole at 5 all before the lights went and Matt Beales locked in battle with Joe Tyndall .

However, without question, the match of the day was no. 3 seeds James Gubb and Joe Reeve v. the talented youngsters Charlie Beales and Matteo Cranchi. In an epic encounter, the Dulwich College boys came from a set down and 6-1 down in the deciding champ. tie-break to save a match point and take it 11-9 in the twilight. Charlie even pulled off a hot-dog lob - surely the shot of the day. The first seeds have fallen!

Scheduling

A reminder that if you are unable to play a match on the scheduled date, and you have not previously notified us, you run the risk of forfeiting the match if the schedule does not allow for an alternative date for the match to be played. All players should report to the referee's desk in the clubhouse 10 minutes before they are due to play. You will be assigned a court on the day, when you report in.
