OC Club Champs 2024 - Mon 17th June (Day 10) Order of Play

Dear all,

The second week of the champs has arrived. The growing OC crowds have seen the runners and riders in action now and picked their favourites, but this week it’s crunch time as our seeded players start facing up against each other in the business end of the draws.

Ones to watch tomorrow (Monday 17th June)...

OC Academy rising star Finlay Brown , aged 14, has his work cut out in his maiden Men’s Singles open campaign against seasoned heavy hitting baseliner, 16th seed, David Jovic , in a bid to make the last 16 of the draw.

In the women’s doubles, in-form duo Sarah Marchand and Marguerite Michael get a crack at the 3rd seeds Alice Allan and Jane Buswell. Definitely one to keep an eye on (if they let you!).

What else is on?

Iconic OC duo Mahvash Tavassoli and Alyson Fox will be behind the bar to keep you refreshed tomorrow. This week, we will also have the Euros football and Queens tennis on the TV in the clubhouse.

Sunday's highlights

The day started with some high-quality men’s doubles matches. The young Henderson brothers didn’t quite have enough to overcome the punchy Camberwell based 4th seeds Marc Baylis and Jed Blacknell . It was a close affair, finishing 6-4, 7-5. The final point was won with a dodgy net-cord return forehand by Blacknell, who boasted afterwards that he had been winning a lot of important points like that recently.

The men’s doubles first seeds Matt Whitehead and Jo Weiland were also in action in the early 10.30am kick-off, playing the banana-skin pairing of Karanvir Anand and Rob Green , who very nearly slipped them up in their first match. Matt and Jo lost the first set 3-6, but came back emphatically to win the next two sets, both dialled in and getting the fist-pumps out. The next round sees the top seeds Whitehead and Weiland face the unorthodox crowd-pleasers Tyndall and McCreery , who will have almost certainly started the mind-games on WhatsApp already.

The afternoon and evening matches included comfortable performances from the XD powerhouse top-seeds Tom Fenton and Virunee Viravong , pairing up in their first champs campaign together. They rolled Baylis and Butler over 3 and 0 on the show court, in a bid to get their names on the board. Club-champs royalty Hamid Irshad , who is no stranger to the OC champions board in the clubhouse, defeated the 3rd unlucky Henderson of the day, Robert, to progress in the 50+ singles. Hamid is still in all draws going in to the second week and going strong!

Result of the day has to go to Sally Casey and Yuki Langley , though, after defeating last years winners of the WD50+ Anne Traynor and Alison O’Mahoney – well done Sally and Yuki! What a win.

Scheduling

A reminder that if you are unable to play a match on the scheduled date, and you have not previously notified us, you run the risk of forfeiting the match if the schedule does not allow for an alternative date for the match to be played. All players should report to the referee's desk in the clubhouse 10 minutes before they are due to play. You will be assigned a court on the day, when you report in.
