Something changed today at the Championships. It was obvious to all who were there: Robert Green, King of ‘con carne and the 4th team’s Robinson Crusoe behind the bar, could have told you. Henderson père et mère at the picnic tables could have told you. JM Steiger could have told you with just a look.
It
sounded
different. The spectators oohed and aahed, the players grunted and exhaled and swore. Not like the average member grunts and sighs and swears; not your standard spectator appreciation when the good shot stands out from the average. No, this was next level vocal expression. And the
balls
. The balls popped and hissed as if pushed to their limits, struggling for air in the heat.
Because today the contenders got serious.
The zebras are all gone. Only the Big Cats remain.
Here are the names you recognise, the players you’ve seen, some the ones you’ve only ever
heard
about: Pulford, Fenton, Pearson, Hymis, James, Michell, Moody, Flind, Buswell, Whitehead, Sergeant, Britton, Tyndall, Walker, Yuen, Hendersons (fils 1 et fils 2), Blacknell, Hladick, Reeve, Harper, Irshad, Allen, Anand, Baylis, Mitchell. People who enter a tournament expecting to get to the semi-finals… at least.
And dare we say it? The handful of brave survivors who go unnamed.
The results speak for themselves, I need not give you the blow-by-blow of each encounter. Instead, note this: today, one tournament ended and another began. Only the very best make it to the final stages.
And let us not forget the contenders who did not play today, absent from the list above and resting up for the challenge ahead; you know
their
names. They return tomorrow to join the fight for places in the semi-finals and finals.
But there are too many names on the lists to fit the available spaces - some contenders must fall.
