Dear OC Junior,
Was 2026 the greatest OC Juniors Club Champs finals day ever? We certainly think so! The sun shone down and you lot showed up, on and off court, flaunting some fabulous free-swinging tennis, displaying great team spirit and plenty of positive energy, and not all fuelled by fizzy drinks from the bar!
Saturday morning brought out our finest young guns, with the U9's round robin finals on courts 6 and 7 won by Roman Bidder, with Arlo Coletto just pipping Oskar Williams to clinch second spot in an epic 12-10 tiebreak thriller!
The U8s followed suit on court 1,with Ethan Wu taking the crown in a hard fought series of red-ball duels on the hard court. Not to be outdone, the U10s brought steel, guile and plenty of smiles in their Fast4 contests, with the final between Roman and Jonas going Roman's way on the day.
Only Englishmen, mad dogs and, it seems, U11s boys go out in the midday sun - in the heat, no.1 seed Monty Coletto got the better of no.2 seed Arhiaan Anand to take the trophy. Shortly after, the hotly-anticipated U14s boys final got underway between Phoenix Bidder and Joaquin Dumlao , with the big hitting Dumlao eventually proving the winner in a 90-minute, three-set epic.
The U12s girls final was also a three-set nailbiter that could've gone either way; eventually Zoia Vaidyanathan beat Astrid Lewis in the champs tiebreak. Next up, the seemingly annual U14s girls final between Koto O'Sullivan and Omaira Anand got underway, and boy, this one didn't disappoint either - despite losing the first set Koto powered back to come through on top in three.
If we're talking power then surely we must pay dues to the U18s boys - you could hear the ball being smacked about from streets away as Hugo Odgers and Rishi Venkat went blow for blow on court 6! Long rallies ensued with neither willing to back down. In the end, Hugo won, but both boys deserve huge credit for a superb spectacle.
The Odgers clan weren't finished though, as Hugo's sister Livia Odgers scooped the U16s girls trophy with a hard-fought victory over the equally impressive Koto O'Sullivan .
The U12s boys final between top seeds Phoenix Bidder and Monty Coletto drew a big crowd to court 7, where Monty's monstrous down-the-line backhands and Phoenix's deadly crosscourt forehands drew 'oohs' and 'aahs' from family and friends. In the end, Phoenix prevailed in two sets. Big thanks to George for refereeing this one with an unflappable air of calm authority.
Onto the OC juniors finale - the boys U14s doubles clash of the young titans between Monty Coletto and Seb Lee, and Alphie Dilworth and Vasili Tsangalis . Special shout out to Seb Lee, whose good vibes and laser-precise volleys gave the edge, and eventual win, to the younger pair.
Congratulations not just to our winners and finalists, but everyone who took part - your collective enthusiasm lit up the club! We look forward to seeing you all on court in the last few weeks of term before the summer break...
