The Richer The Poorer: A Book discussion with Stewart Lansley

Dear Members

We are delighted to announce, a book discussion with Stewart Lansley.

In an event chaired by Nigel Thorpe, Stewart will talk about his new book: The Richer, The Poorer, How Britain Enriched the Few and Failed the Poor, a 200-year History.

Policy Press | The Richer, The Poorer - How Britain Enriched the Few and Failed the Poor. A 200-Year History, By Stewart Lansley (bristoluniversitypress.co.uk)

The book charts the roller coaster history of both rich and poor in Britain, and the mechanisms that link extreme wealth and impoverishment. It asks why Britain, once one of the most equal of countries, is now the second most unequal nation in the rich world? Why are rich and poor citizens judged by very different standards? Why has social progress been so narrowly shared? With growing calls for a fairer post-COVID-19 society, what needs to be done to break Britain’s 200-year long poverty/inequality cycle?

“Scrupulous, impressive and irrefutable. An utterly necessary book.” David Kynaston, historian.

"Lansley is a master of the telling anecdote and has produced a wonderfully readable and insightful history of how the rich have impoverished the poor." Jonathan Bradshaw, University of York

"A remarkably informed and readable history with a powerful message.” Jacob S. Hacker, Yale University

Stewart is a longstanding member of Old College. He is a Council member of the Progressive Economy Forum, a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the thinktank Compass and has written widely on poverty, wealth and inequality. He has held academic posts at several universities and think tanks.

Copies of the book will be on sale for £15 with all proceeds going to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal | British Red Cross.

The event is free for members but you will need to reserve a place, please use the link to do this.
