OC Club Champs. 2024 - Tues 18th (Day 11) Order of Play

Dear all,

Wimbledon. Early 2000s. No roof. No middle Sunday. Only partly ticketed outside courts. It’s Manic Monday, the last 16 of the Men’s and Women’s Singles and you don’t know where to turn for all the quality matches going on. This is Old College LTC tomorrow. Be there.

Ones to watch...

We genuinely don’t know where to start! It’s quarter final day for the Women’s Singles, with no.4 seed Emma Michell vs. no.5 seed Jane Buswell the pick of the bunch, resuming their rivalry in a rematch of last year’s QF that Emz won in a tight encounter. Is revenge on the cards?

We’ve got all eight Men’s last 16 matches on, with Nick Orgovanyi the only non-seeded player left in the draw (the seeding committee got something right!). Nick faces off against Joe ‘I hate singles’ Tyndall at 6.30pm. We can’t see a straightforward win for anyone but, putting our necks on the line, no. 6 seed Jed Blacknell vs. no. 9 seed Benson Yuen , no. 5 seed Stan Ntchouissi vs. no.10 seed Charlie Beales (already in Grafton’s Men’s Singles final – come play for us in the Surrey Leagues pls, Charlie) and no.13 seed Joe Reeve vs. no.4 seed Jo Weiland are going the distance.

If that’s not quite enough for you, we’ve got a tasty looking men’s doubles for you at 8pm with no.1 seeds Matt Whitehead and Jo Weiland taking on no.7 seeds Joe Tyndall and Max McCreery (hopefully speaking again after Joe showed no mercy in both beating, and tagging, Max in their singles). Watch out, too, for the in-form Alice Allan and Charlie Casey taking on Emma Michell and Hamid Irshad in the mixed.

What else is on?

Remember the Mixed Doubles final last year? We’re going for a replica. OC Men’s Team 1 are going to be cranking out the tunes, and pizza, to give tomorrow the soundtrack it deserves. Get ready for some bangers.

2023 Phil Harper & Marc Baylis

There’s going to be a new name on the trophy this year! The floodlights went off, play continued and Charlie Casey and Bill Meredith pulled off the shock of the tournament so far, ousting no.1 seeds and defending champions Phil Harper and Marc Baylis 10-8 in a champ tiebreak, in the dark. What a win.

And that wasn’t the day’s only shock. We’re guaranteed an unseeded pair in the Men’s Doubles SF after OC Men’s Team 3 & 5 pairing ‘the Sams’ Colbeck and Foster stunned no. 5 seeds Benson Yuen and coach Hamid Irshad in straights 7-6, 6-4. Next up for Messrs Colbeck & Foster are fellow giant killers, youngsters Charlie Beales & Matteo Cranchi (also a 6-0, 6-2 victor in the u-18 singles today).

Elsewhere, there were comfortable wins for last year’s finalists Alice Allan and Jane Buswell in the Women’s doubles, and for no.3 seed in the Women’s Singles, Amy Sergeant . Increasingly worth a flutter for the title we reckon (Virunee scowls).

Scheduling

A reminder that if you are unable to play a match on the scheduled date, and you have not previously notified us, you run the risk of forfeiting the match if the schedule does not allow for an alternative date for the match to be played. All players should report to the referee's desk in the clubhouse 10 minutes before they are due to play. You will be assigned a court on the day, when you report in.
